Mala counter helps to keep the record of the accumulated number of mantras, without the distraction of the practitioner’s concentration. It is a traditional, as well as practical aid suitable for longer recitations with many repetitions.
Usually, two counters are used on one mala. They are attached to the mala by a simple loop, symmetrically at the same distance from the guru bead (the form of which symbolizes the stupa). One counter is to record tens of mantras, the other hundreds. Both have ten metal rings and have differentiating ending; one ends with a vajra the other with a bell. Recording is done by a simple movement of one ring for each recorded cycle (i.e. every ten, hundred malas).
